Robert leads the firm’s private equity real estate (PERE) work, and has more than 30 years of experience in the real estate sector

He has particular experience advising private equity real estate firms, asset and operational managers, public and private real estate investment trusts (REITs) and financial institutions on UK and European joint ventures, real estate M&A, equity financings, real estate funds and asset and operational management arrangements.

Alongside our private equity real estate team, Robert produced a first of its kind operational real estate report in 2023, considering the scale of the market opportunity in the UK, how operational real estate can be accessed, and some of the key structuring and governance considerations. As this significant structural trend continues to grow and impact virtually every real estate sector, we are due to publish a 2024 update report. Realstar

Advising Realstar on the sale of a £750m portfolio of eight build-to-rent (BTR) and student accommodation properties to QuadReal Property Group. Macfarlanes also advised Realstar on joint venture arrangements with QuadReal in respect of these assets.

NatWest Pension Trustee Limited

Advising NatWest Pension Trustee Limited (NWPTL), the trustee of the NatWest Group Pension Fund, on a 15-year Inspired Villages joint venture with financial services company Legal & General. The joint venture will invest £500m of equity to build net zero carbon, later living communities which will be developed and operated by Inspired Villages, with the aim of developing a portfolio of 34 sites, with around 5,100 homes and 8000 residents.

Numerous private equity firms on asset management arrangements including promote structures. Various sales including numerous hotels and portfolio deals.

Sadel Group

Advising the Sadel Group on its corporate reorganisation and funding arrangements, including operational management agreements for its temperature controlled warehouse group Magnavale.

Legal & General

Advising Legal & General on the sale of office building Central Saint Giles, which includes more than 408,000 sq ft of office space and more than 100 residential apartments, to multinational technology company Google for $1bn.

The Marcol Group and Marathon Asset Management

Advising the Marcol Group and Marathon Asset Management on the restructuring and disposal of part of their European logistics portfolio.
